The HC560 was WD's first drive with OptiNAND, which pairs the spinning disks with a small embedded flash device that holds drive metadata. Together with energy-assisted recording and a triple-stage actuator, that lets WD fit 20TB of CMR capacity on nine disks in a standard 3.5-inch, helium-sealed body.

WD's data sheet lists a 512MB buffer, a sustained transfer rate of up to 291 MB/s, a workload rating of up to 550TB per year and a projected MTBF of 2.5 million hours. The drive is meant for cloud-style and enterprise capacity tiers: object storage, distributed file systems, backup and disaster recovery targets, and big data sets. It is not a replacement for 10K SAS drives or flash where response time matters.

WD's data sheet lists two SATA Base SE models of the 20TB HC560: WUH722020ALE6L4 (part 0F38755) and WUH722020BLE6L4 (part 0F38785), the one listed here. They are separate part numbers, so if you are matching an existing fleet or a qualified parts list, order the exact number you need. This model is 512e, uses the legacy pin 3 layout without Power Disable, and has no encryption. The SED version is WUH722020BLE6L1.

Check before ordering:

Interface: SATA 6Gb/s. It works on SATA ports and most SAS controllers, but dual-port designs need the SAS model.

Firmware support for 20TB drives in your HBA, RAID controller or NAS.

Trays: this is a bare drive. HPE and Dell servers need OEM carriers and may flag non-OEM firmware.

RAID layout: at 20TB per drive, dual parity or erasure coding is the common choice to cover long rebuilds.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0679/1354/7959/files/western-digital-wuh722020ble6l4-20tb-7200rpm-sata-lff-hdd-front.png?v=1793869728
