HPE P53553-B21 20TB 7200RPM SAS 12G LFF LP Business Critical Hard Drive

The HPE P53553-B21 is a 20TB, 7200 RPM, 12Gb/s SAS hard drive in the 3.5-inch large form factor, supplied in HPE's Low Profile (LP) hot-plug carrier. It is a helium-filled, 512e drive with Instant Secure Erase (ISE), sold in HPE's Business Critical class as a Multi Vendor option. In plain terms it is HPE's 20TB nearline SAS drive for current ProLiant servers with LFF bays.

Each bay holds 20TB, so a 12-bay LFF server reaches 240TB raw. That density is why this option is chosen for backup servers, archive and reference storage, video retention and software-defined storage nodes. HPE's QuickSpecs gives the drive up to 260 MiB/s of sequential throughput, roughly 105 random read IOPS at 128KiB, 6.1W at idle and 9.9W under random read/write load. HPE describes the Business Critical class as a medium-workload tier, below its 10K Mission Critical drives, so keep busy transactional data on faster media.

SAS brings a full SAS command set and works with HPE Smart Array and MegaRAID controllers, but it also means this drive cannot be attached to a SATA-only port. If your design is SATA, the matching part is P53554-B21. If your server uses Smart Carrier bays, the 20TB SAS drive in that carrier is P53552-B21. The servers HPE lists for the LFF LP carrier are shown in the compatibility list on this page. Check the QuickSpecs for your exact model, because not every chassis variant has LFF bays or supports every capacity.

Before ordering, check:

• Drive cage: LFF with LP carriers. The LP carrier does not fit SFF bays or Smart Carrier bays.
• Controller: SAS capable, with firmware that supports 20TB 512e drives.
• RAID plan: with 20TB members, RAID 6 or RAID 60 is commonly used to cover long rebuilds.
