SAS, SATA, and NVMe: How to Choose Enterprise Server Drives

by ICT Devices 05 Aug 2026

Choosing drives for a server is not like buying a drive for a desktop. Enterprise storage is about the right interface, the right form factor, and the right balance of capacity, speed, and endurance for your workload. This guide breaks down the choices in plain terms so you can pick with confidence.

Interface: SATA, SAS, or NVMe

The interface decides how a drive connects and how fast it can move data.

Interface Best for Notes
SATA Capacity and lighter workloads Lower cost, single port
SAS Busy servers and storage arrays The enterprise workhorse: dual port for redundancy, higher reliability
NVMe Databases, virtualisation, cache tiers The fastest option, connects over PCIe

Hard drive or SSD?

Hard drives still win on cost per terabyte, which makes them a strong choice for bulk storage, backups, and archives. Solid state drives win on speed, low latency, and reliability, which makes them the choice for operating systems, databases, and any workload where response time matters. Many servers use both: SSDs for performance, HDDs for capacity.

Form factors and RPM

  • 2.5in SFF: the most common server drive size, used for both HDDs and SSDs
  • 3.5in LFF: used for high capacity hard drives
  • U.2 and M.2: form factors for NVMe SSDs, including boot devices

For hard drives, spindle speed matters. 10K RPM drives balance capacity and speed, while 15K RPM drives deliver the highest performance for demanding workloads.

Read Intensive vs Mixed Use SSDs

Enterprise SSDs are rated by how much data you can write to them over their life. Read Intensive drives suit workloads that mostly read data. Mixed Use drives handle more writes and suit databases and virtualisation. Matching the drive to your write load protects both performance and lifespan.

Make sure it fits your server

Servers expect specific drive carriers, interfaces, and firmware. The safest way to confirm a fit is the part number. Tell us your server model or the part you are replacing and we will confirm the right drive.
