How to Choose Server Memory for HPE ProLiant and Dell PowerEdge

by ICT Devices 05 Aug 2026

Adding memory is one of the most cost effective server upgrades you can make, but only if you choose modules the server actually supports. Here is a simple, reliable way to pick the right server memory for an HPE ProLiant or Dell PowerEdge system.

Step 1: Check what your server supports

Every server has a supported memory list in its documentation. HPE publishes these in QuickSpecs, and Dell publishes memory guidelines. The list tells you the generation (DDR4 or DDR5), the types allowed (RDIMM or LRDIMM), the maximum speed, and how many slots and channels you have. Start there so you never buy a module the server will reject.

Step 2: Match the generation and type

Memory generations are not interchangeable. A DDR4 server takes DDR4, and a DDR5 server takes DDR5. Within DDR4, most servers use Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM) memory. Do not mix RDIMM and LRDIMM in the same server.

Step 3: Match speed and rank

Modules are rated by speed, from DDR4-2133 to DDR4-3200. A server runs all modules at the speed of the slowest installed module, and very dense configurations can step the speed down automatically. Rank (values like 2Rx4 or 4DRx4) also affects how much memory a server accepts, so check the supported list for the ranks it allows.

Step 4: Plan capacity and population

Decide the capacity per module (such as 32GB or 64GB) and the total you need. For best performance, install memory in balanced sets across the memory channels, following the population order in your server guide. Filling channels evenly lets the server use its full memory bandwidth.

Step 5: Confirm with the part number

The surest way to get the right module is the manufacturer part number. If you tell us your server model, for example a ProLiant DL380 Gen10, or the part you are replacing, we will confirm the exact module before you buy.
