The Kioxia KCD81RUG3T84 is the 3.84TB base model of the CD8-R series, Kioxia's newer read-intensive data center NVMe SSD. It uses PCIe 4.0 with the NVMe 1.4 specification and Kioxia's 112-layer BiCS FLASH 3D TLC memory in a 2.5-inch, 15 mm drive. Compared with the older CD6-R, Kioxia's figures show higher write performance and lower active power at this capacity, so it is the more current choice for new PCIe 4.0 builds.
Kioxia rates the CD8-R at 1 drive write per day, which fits read-heavy work such as cloud and hyperscale storage, virtualization, web and media serving, analytics and relational databases with modest write rates. For 3.84TB Kioxia lists up to 7,200 MB/s sequential read, 3,800 MB/s sequential write, 1,250,000 random read IOPS and 195,000 random write IOPS. Typical power is 14 W active and 5 W ready. Kioxia also notes partial support for the Open Compute Project Datacenter NVMe SSD specification v2.0, plus power loss protection and end-to-end data correction.
The CD8-R is a single-port x4 drive. Kioxia's product brief is published as the 2.5-inch U.2 version and does not claim U.3 tri-mode conformance, so plan on an NVMe U.2 bay with a direct-attach or switch-based connection. It ships as a bare drive with no OEM tray or firmware, which matters in HPE, Dell and Lenovo servers.

Both are 1 DWPD read-intensive PCIe 4.0 drives. At 3.84TB, Kioxia lists the CD8-R at 7,200/3,800 MB/s and 14 W active, compared with 6,200/2,350 MB/s and 15 W for the CD6-R. The CD8-R uses newer 112-layer flash.
KCD81RUG3T84 is the base model. KCD8XRUG3T84 adds Sanitize Instant Erase, and KCD8DRUG3T84 is the self-encrypting version supporting TCG Opal and Ruby.
No. Kioxia describes it as a single-port design. For dual-port enclosures, look at Kioxia's enterprise CM-series drives instead.
It is a generic Kioxia drive with no OEM tray or firmware. It needs an NVMe bay and the correct carrier, and the server vendor's management tools may treat it as a third-party drive.
