Overview

The Dell PowerEdge R760xs is the scaled-down sibling of the R760: the same 2U, two-socket format with fewer memory slots and a simpler option list. It is sold configure-to-order and suits mid-size virtualization hosts, file and application servers, and branch or departmental workloads that do not need the full R760.

It runs one or two 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 28 cores, or 4th Generation processors with up to 32 cores. Sixteen DDR5 RDIMM slots support up to 1.5TB at up to 5200 MT/s. This listing is the 16 x 2.5-inch SAS/SATA chassis. Dell also lists 8 x 2.5-inch, 8 and 12 x 3.5-inch, and a 16 SAS/SATA plus 8 NVMe version, as well as a diskless chassis. Controllers include the PERC H965i, H755, H755N and H355, the HBA355i and HBA465i, and S160 software RAID. BOSS-N1 adds two M.2 NVMe boot drives.

Two 1GbE LOM ports are standard and an OCP 3.0 card is optional. With one processor the server offers up to four PCIe slots; with two it offers up to six, a mix of Gen5 and Gen4. Power supplies range from 600W to 1800W, including an 1100W DC unit, and iDRAC9 provides remote management.

ICT Devices quotes the R760xs to the configuration you send and gives today's price on request. Before you send it, check the points below.

  • One or two processors, since the PCIe slot count depends on it
  • Total memory against the 16-slot, 1.5TB limit
  • Whether you need NVMe bays, which means the 16 + 8 chassis and not this one
  • RAID controller or HBA model
  • OCP 3.0 network card and power supply rating

Frequently asked questions

How is the R760xs different from the R760?

The R760xs has 16 DIMM slots and a 1.5TB memory limit against 32 slots and 8TB on the R760, lower maximum core counts, and up to six PCIe slots instead of eight. In exchange it is a simpler and usually less costly build.

Does the 16-bay R760xs take NVMe drives?

Dell lists this 16 x 2.5in chassis as SAS/SATA. For NVMe, Dell offers an 8 x 2.5in SAS/SATA/NVMe chassis and a 16 SAS/SATA plus 8 NVMe chassis.

How many PCIe slots do I get with one processor?

Up to four with a single CPU and up to six with two, according to Dell's spec sheet.

Why does the 4th Generation CPU list go to more cores than the 5th?

On this model Dell supports 4th Generation processors with up to 32 cores and 5th Generation processors with up to 28 cores. Choose by the specific CPU model you need.
