Overview

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is the 2U general-purpose server in Dell's 14th generation. Buyers choose a refurbished R740 when they need more PCIe slots and GPU room than a 1U box offers, for workloads such as VDI, virtualization clusters, application servers and accelerated computing. This listing is the 16-bay 2.5-inch chassis.

It runs one or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Dell's spec sheet lists 2nd Generation CPUs with up to 28 cores each, and many refurbished units carry 1st Generation chips. The board has 24 DDR4 DIMM slots, supports RDIMM and LRDIMM at up to 2933 MT/s, and tops out at 3TB. The front holds up to sixteen 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives. Dell lists the PERC H330, H350, H730P, H740P and H750 RAID controllers, the HBA330 and HBA350i for pass-through, S140 software RAID, and a BOSS card with two M.2 SSDs for the operating system. The R740 has no NVMe front bays in Dell's spec sheet; for NVMe, look at the R740xd.

Riser options give up to eight PCIe Gen3 slots, four of them x16 at most, and Dell rates the chassis for up to three 300W or six 150W GPUs. A network daughter card provides 4 x 1GbE, 2 x 10GbE plus 2 x 1GbE, 4 x 10GbE or 2 x 25GbE. Power supplies range from 495W to 2400W, and management is through iDRAC9.

Send ICT Devices the configuration you need and we quote that exact build. Points to settle first:

  • Riser set, which fixes the slot count and whether GPUs fit
  • GPU plans: they need the GPU power cables and higher-wattage power supplies
  • RAID controller and whether you want a BOSS boot card
  • Network daughter card speed and connector type
  • iDRAC9 license level and rail kit

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the R740 and the R740xd?

The R740 tops out at 16 x 2.5in or 8 x 3.5in front bays and is aimed at PCIe and GPU expansion. The R740xd adds 24 x 2.5in and 12 x 3.5in chassis, mid and rear bays, and NVMe support.

Can the R740 take GPUs?

Yes. Dell's spec sheet rates it for up to three 300W or six 150W GPUs. The right risers, GPU power cables and power supplies are needed, so tell us the card model when you ask for a quote.

How many PCIe slots does it have?

Up to eight PCIe Gen3 slots with the full riser set, of which at most four are x16. Slots on the second and third risers need the second processor installed.

Does the 16-bay R740 support NVMe drives?

Dell's R740 spec sheet lists only SAS/SATA for the 16 x 2.5in front bays. If you need front NVMe, the R740xd is the model to quote.
