This is the 12-bay 3.5-inch version of the Dell PowerEdge R740xd. It is the chassis buyers pick for capacity: backup targets, file servers, surveillance and archive storage, and object or software-defined storage nodes that use large SAS or SATA hard drives.
The platform is Dell's 14th generation, with one or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Dell's spec sheet lists 2nd Generation CPUs with up to 28 cores per socket, and refurbished units often ship with 1st Generation processors. It has 24 DDR4 DIMM slots and supports up to 3TB of RDIMM or LRDIMM memory at up to 2933 MT/s. The front holds twelve 3.5-inch SAS or SATA drives. Dell also lists an optional mid bay for four more 3.5-inch drives and a rear cage for two 3.5-inch drives, for up to 18 large-form-factor drives in one server. Controllers include the PERC H330, H730P and H740P, the HBA330 for pass-through, the external H840 and 12Gbps SAS HBA for JBOD shelves, and a BOSS M.2 boot card.
Networking is on a daughter card with 4 x 1GbE, 2 x 10GbE plus 2 x 1GbE, 4 x 10GbE or 2 x 25GbE. Up to eight PCIe Gen3 slots are possible with the full riser set, although rear drive cages reduce that. Redundant hot-plug power supplies range from 495W to 2400W. iDRAC9 covers remote console, monitoring and firmware updates.
Tell ICT Devices the drive count, capacity and controller you want and we quote that build. Check these items before you order.

Twelve in the front, plus Dell's optional mid bay for four and rear cage for two, for up to 18 x 3.5in drives. The mid and rear bays are separate options, so say whether you need them.
Dell's spec sheet lists the 3.5in front bays as SAS/SATA. NVMe is listed for 2.5in bays. If you need NVMe, ask us about the 24 x 2.5in R740xd.
For hardware RAID, the PERC H730P or H740P with cache is the usual choice. For ZFS, Ceph or other software-defined storage, the HBA330 passes the disks straight through. We quote whichever you specify.
Dell states that GPU and FPGA options are available only on the 24 x 2.5in R740xd chassis, not on this 12 x 3.5in one.
