Overview

This is the 12 LFF version of the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10, built on HPE chassis 868705-B21. It is the capacity model of the family, chosen for backup servers, file shares, video retention and software-defined storage nodes that rely on large 3.5-inch drives.

The platform supports one or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 1st or 2nd Generation, with up to 28 cores each. It has 24 DDR4 DIMM slots and a 3.0TB memory maximum with 128GB LRDIMMs. Twelve 3.5-inch SAS/SATA bays fill the front. HPE lists an optional four-bay LFF mid-plane cage and a rear cage with three LFF and two SFF bays, which takes the server to 19 LFF plus 2 SFF drives. The embedded S100i controller offers software RAID on SATA drives, and the Smart Array E208i-a, P408i-a and P816i-a modular controllers provide hardware RAID. HPE ships the cable for the 16-lane P816i-a with this chassis.

The 868705-B21 chassis includes the embedded 4 x 1GbE 331i adapter and a FlexibleLOM slot for faster networking. Three PCIe 3.0 slots sit on the primary riser. The 12 LFF chassis comes with six high-performance fans as standard. Flex Slot power supplies are offered at 500W, 800W and 1600W, and iLO 5 provides remote management.

How many 3.5in drives can the DL380 Gen10 hold?

Twelve in the front. With HPE's optional four-bay mid-plane cage and the three-bay rear cage, the total is 19 LFF drives, plus two SFF drives at the rear.

Which RAID controller drives all twelve bays?

The Smart Array P816i-a has 16 internal lanes and is the usual choice. HPE's QuickSpecs note that the 12 LFF chassis ships with the cable needed for the P816i-a.

Does the rear drive cage block PCIe slots?

Yes. HPE states that the 3 LFF rear drive box consumes the space for the secondary and tertiary risers. The 2 SFF rear box leaves room for a riser.

Can I convert an 8 LFF chassis into this 12 LFF model?

No. HPE states that the 8 LFF chassis cannot be upgraded to a 12 LFF front in the field. Order the 12 LFF chassis if you need twelve front bays.
